The story

Xclusive Yachts runs a shared sightseeing speedboat tour of about an hour and a half from Xclusive Marina, the company's own pontoon behind Al Majara Towers in Dubai Marina. The boat leaves the Marina and runs along the coast with the Marina skyline, Ain Dubai's great wheel, Atlantis on the tip of the Palm and the sail of Burj Al Arab in view, stopping for photographs and for the commentary, which is in English. The boats are open, so every seat looks out on all sides; seats go to whoever boards first. The operator sells one ticket: the 90-minute tour without a transfer, so you reach the marina on your own. The nearest metro station is DMCC, and a taxi can drop you at Al Majara Towers.

What it feels like: this is the quick, windy way to see Dubai's coast. You take your seat, the boat idles out between the Marina towers, and then the engines open up and the city slides past at speed, the wake fanning out white behind you. The stops are where you breathe out and take the pictures: the wheel close enough to see its cabins, Atlantis pink across the water, Burj Al Arab rising from its own island. On a calm day you stay dry; on a choppy one you get a few splashes and a good laugh out of it. Ninety minutes later you are back at the pontoon, a little sunburnt and wind-blown.

Who this suits: friends groups and the adventure-minded, for whom the speed is the point; couples who want a short, lively outing between a Marina lunch and dinner; and families with teenagers or children aged four and over, who wear life jackets on board. It does not suit grandparents: the operator does not take guests aged 65 and above on these boats, nor anyone pregnant, nor anyone with a back problem. A multigenerational family is better off on a slower yacht or dhow cruise from the Marina.

  2. After the safety briefing the boat leaves the Marina and runs along the coast past Ain Dubai, Atlantis on the Palm and Burj Al Arab, stopping for photographs and commentary. Everyone stays in the boat for the whole tour; there is no swimming stop.

  3. The boat returns to Xclusive Marina, where the tour ends.
