The story

The View at The Palm is the observation deck in The Palm Tower on Palm Jumeirah. The standard visit starts with the Palm Jumeirah exhibit at ground level, with its aquarium tunnels and floor mapping about how the island was built, and goes up to level 52, 240 metres above sea level, where there is a 360-degree deck, an open-air terrace, a coffee shop and an Italian restaurant. The Next Level is the highest deck, on level 54 at 250 metres, and The View sells it with fast-track access. The operator offers two tickets that both include The Next Level: fast-track Next Level admission, and a 'Next Level VIP' ticket, which we take to be The View's VIP Experience with a guided tour by one of its ambassadors, fast-track access to both decks and a mocktail at Lolli, the Italian restaurant. Each comes in a prime or a non-prime slot; prime costs more.

What it feels like: the lift doors open and the whole shape of the Palm is suddenly below you, the fronds reaching into the sea like the fingers of a hand, the crescent curving round them and the Gulf beyond. From level 54 you are ten metres higher again, at the top of what The View opens to visitors. Look inland and the Marina towers and the Dubai skyline run along the horizon. It is a short visit, an hour or so, and the part you remember is standing still for a minute and simply seeing what you have only seen on a map.

Who this suits: couples on an anniversary or honeymoon who want the higher deck and less waiting; active seniors and multigenerational families, because a high-speed lift takes you up and the visit is short; and anyone who likes the idea of a guide explaining what they are looking at, which is what the VIP ticket adds. Families with toddlers should know The View does not allow strollers inside the experience; they go in the lockers.
