The story

teamLab is the Japanese art collective whose walk-through light installations have queues around the block in Tokyo, and Phenomena is its Abu Dhabi home: a white, curving building on the Saadiyat Cultural District waterfront, opened in 2025, with 17,000 square metres of rooms inside by teamLab's own figure. There is no fixed route. You wander from a hall where colour floods the floor to spaces built around mist, water and moving light, and the works change as people move through them. Most visitors spend one to two hours, by the tourism board's page.

What it feels like: like being inside a screen and inside weather at the same time. Rooms go from pitch dark to a wash of colour, floors reflect, and children run ahead into the next space before the adults have finished the last one. It is quiet apart from the soundscapes and the odd gasp. Phones come out for everything, and for once the photographs are almost as good as the room. It is the sight in Abu Dhabi that a teenager will show friends first.

Who this suits, and why: the family with teenagers and the school-holiday family, because this is the museum where nobody has to be persuaded; couples, for whom it is an unusually good evening out; and friends groups on a photo-led trip. Grandparents can enjoy it but should know some rooms are dark with uneven or reflective floors, so a stick and a steady arm help. Note the adults-only evenings below before booking a family slot.
