The story

The operator sells this as the Surf High Experience: a one-hour session on the sea in Dubai, on one of four boards. On a wakeboard you are pulled behind a boat on a tow rope and ride its wake. On a wake-surf board you start on the rope and, once you are up, let it go and ride the wave the boat leaves behind. A wake foil is a board on a hydrofoil wing under the water, which lifts the board clear of the surface once you have speed. An e-foil is a hydrofoil board with its own electric motor, steered with a hand-held controller, so no tow rope is needed. Each session can be booked meeting at the water, or with a private transfer from your hotel, which the operator gives as two hours door to door. The operator does not name the operator, the launch point, the boat or whether an instructor rides with you; all of that is on the operator's voucher, and your captain reads it to you before you pay.

What it feels like: the first few minutes are mostly falling in. The water is warm for most of the year and the falls are soft, and then there is a moment, usually on the third or fourth try, when the board comes up under you and you are standing on the sea with the city behind you. On the foil and the e-foil that moment is stranger still: the board lifts off the surface, the slap of the water stops, and you glide above it in near silence. What happens
