The story

A rainforest that wakes up when the lights go out. Ride the tram through Night Safari's habitats, walk its four trails — Tasmanian Devil, Pangolin and Leopard among them — and catch the Creatures of the Night show. Hotel transfers folded in.

  1. Hotel pickup in the evening and the transfer out to Mandai, around thirty minutes from the centre. Entry is timed and skips the ticket queue, which on a weekend is worth the whole difference in price.

  2. The tram first, which is the right order: a narrated loop with audio commentary through the park's habitats. Then the four walking trails at your own pace — Tasmanian Devil, Pangolin and Leopard among them, the last home to the leopards and flying squirrels — which most people skip and should not.

  3. The Creatures of the Night show before you leave — it runs at 7.30pm, 8.30pm and 9.30pm — short and genuinely good on animal behaviour rather than tricks. Transfers back to the hotel at the end, arriving around eleven. This was the world's first nocturnal wildlife park.
