The story

Qasr Al Watan is a working Presidential palace at Al Ras Al Akhdar in Abu Dhabi, opened to visitors as a cultural landmark about how the country is governed and what the Arab world has given to knowledge. The palace's own ticket page lists what you walk through: the Great Hall, the Presidential Gifts, and the Qasr Al Watan Library, which Visit Abu Dhabi describes as a large collection of books and manuscripts. The general admission ticket also covers the gardens, the Visitor Centre and every public zone and exhibition in the palace and grounds. Time inside is unlimited, but once you leave you cannot go back in.

What it feels like: you come in through the Visitor Centre, ride the palace's free shuttle bus, and step out of the heat into the Great Hall, where the first thing everyone does is look up. After that the pace is yours: the gifts, the library and the gardens, with no guide hurrying you and no limit on time inside. Photography is encouraged for your own use, so the phone comes out often. The operator allows about an hour and a half, which is comfortable, and you leave with a clearer idea of the country than a day of malls gives you.

Who this suits: the multigenerational family and active seniors, because the palace lends wheelchairs free to elderly visitors and people of determination, and has prayer rooms; the school-holiday family with children old enough to be curious about how a country works; couples and photographers, for the architecture. It asks for modest dress and comfortable closed shoes; plan the day's clothes around it.
