The story

Qasr Al Watan is the presidential palace of the UAE and, unusually for a working palace, you can walk through much of it. The palace's own ticket lists the Great Hall, the Presidential Gifts collection and the Qasr Al Watan Library among the zones you enter, along with the gardens and the Palace in Motion show projected onto the building after dark. Two hours inside is comfortable; stay until dark if you want the show.

What it feels like: white, cool and very quiet. You arrive at a visitor centre, take the palace's free shuttle across the grounds, and walk in under a dome that makes people stop talking. Everything is white marble and gold detail; the light comes in soft through carved screens, and the sound is your own footsteps. The library and the gifts rooms are the parts Ahmedabad visitors linger over: an entire room of what heads of state have given each other. After sunset the facade becomes a screen for the light show, and the same building looks completely different.

Who this suits, and why: active seniors and the multigenerational group, because it is level, air-conditioned and unhurried, with a shuttle instead of a long walk; couples who want the evening show and the photographs; and the school-holiday family whose children have had enough of theme parks for a day. Friends groups on a tight schedule can pair it with the Grand Mosque on the same afternoon.

  1. Collection from your Abu Dhabi hotel by shared coach or private vehicle. Ticket-only guests make their own way to the Qasr Al Watan visitor centre.

  2. Security, then the palace's free shuttle bus across the grounds to the palace entrance.

  3. The Great Hall under the dome, the exhibition rooms, the library and the gifts collection, then the gardens. Allow about two hours; there is no time limit, but re-entry is not permitted once you leave.

  4. The light show on the palace facade after dark, if your visit runs into the evening. Ask your captain for the show time on your date.

  5. Transfer guests are collected at the agreed time and driven back to the hotel.
