The story
Qasr Al Hosn is the fort the modern city grew up around: a low, whitewashed stone building with a watchtower, standing in a landscaped square in the middle of downtown Abu Dhabi. The fort itself is the paid part of the visit and holds the exhibitions on the city's early history. Around it, by the site's own page, the House of Artisans (traditional Emirati crafts, with artisans at work) and the Cultural Foundation (founded in 1981 by Sheikh Zayed) are free to enter, so the ticket buys the fort and the rest of the square comes with it. Two hours covers all three at an easy pace.
What it feels like: a pause. After the glass towers and the theme parks, the fort's thick walls and small rooms are cool and quiet, and the exhibits are about pearl divers, wells and a town of palm-frond houses that most visitors never imagine existed here. The square outside is a good place to sit in the late afternoon, and the crafts house has weavers and metalworkers you can watch. It is the one stop in Abu Dhabi where an Ahmedabad visitor sees something older than themselves.
Who this suits, and why: active seniors and the multigenerational group, because it is short, level and full of places to sit; couples who like history and photographs; and the school-holiday family with children who are old enough for a museum. Teenagers and friends groups will do it in an hour, and it fits a city-tour morning rather than a day of its own. Not the pick for toddlers.
