The story
Play DXB is an indoor attraction run by Emaar Entertainment. Emaar runs it at The Dubai Mall and at Dubai Hills Mall, and the operator does not name the branch, so this page describes the one on Level 2 of The Dubai Mall, beside KidZania and Reel Cinemas, and your captain confirms the branch on the voucher. By Emaar's own page it spreads across two levels and 7,000 square metres and mixes virtual reality and augmented reality with physical rides. The rides Emaar names include SpeedWay, a two-seater race car; Drifters, bumper cars; Stealth, a flight you steer yourself; Flying Chairs, a swing ride; Burj Drop, a drop tower; and Dubai Drone. Each ride sets its own age and height rules; Burj Drop, for one, takes children from 110 cm with a guardian and 120 cm on their own.
What it feels like: you walk in from the mall's cool marble corridors into a darker, louder floor of screens, headsets and queues of teenagers. The headset rides are the strange part. Your body knows it is standing in a mall; your eyes insist you are falling off a tower or flying low over a city, and most people grab the rail the first time. The physical rides, the bumper cars and the swing, are plain fun and need no explaining. A few hours here is a good answer to a hot afternoon in May or a rainy-looking day in January, and the rest of the mall, the aquarium and the fountain are a short walk away when you come out.
Who this suits: the family with teenagers first, because it is the one Dubai Mall ticket the teenager chooses rather than tolerates; friends groups, who will turn it into a competition; and the school-holiday family with children tall enough for the rides. It suits grandparents less: headset rides can bring on motion sickness, and much of the floor is standing and queueing. Parents with toddlers should look at KidZania next door instead.
What your ticket covers
Opening hours and entry times are confirmed for your date.
-
On the ticket-only option, make your own way to The Dubai Mall; Play DXB is on Level 2 near KidZania and Reel Cinemas, and Emaar suggests the Cinema Parking on level 7 for drivers. On the transfer options a vehicle collects you from your Dubai hotel; the shared vehicle may collect other guests on the way.
-
Show your voucher at the counter. Which rides and how many your ticket covers depends on the ticket the operator issues; the voucher says so. Start with the headset rides while everyone is fresh, and leave the bumper cars for last.
-
The operator gives about 5 hours for the ticket-only option. On the transfer options the vehicle takes you back to your hotel; your captain confirms the return time.
