The story
The Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi opened in 2025 in the Saadiyat Cultural District, fifteen to twenty minutes from the city centre by its own page, and its headline resident is Stan: a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton the museum describes as one of the most complete ever discovered. Around him the galleries run through the story of the planet, from the formation of the Earth to the life of the Arabian peninsula. Two hours is a fair visit for a family; dinosaur-mad children will want three.
What it feels like: big rooms, big bones and a lot of pointing. The T. rex hall is the moment everyone walks faster towards, and then stands very still under. The rest is quieter: meteorites, fossils, the deep-time story told in cool, dim galleries that are a relief from the Saadiyat sun. It is the museum where the child leads and the grandparents follow, and where an Ahmedabad family that has done the Science City in their own town will recognise the idea done at a different scale.
Who this suits, and why: the school-holiday family with children from about six to fourteen, first of all, because it was built for exactly that visitor; the family with teenagers as the serious half of a Saadiyat day with teamLab Phenomena; and active seniors and the multigenerational group, since it is level, air-conditioned and has benches. Couples without children usually pick the Louvre Abu Dhabi or the Zayed National Museum instead.
