The story

The National Aquarium sits inside Al Qana, the dining-and-leisure strip along the canal on Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street, in the city rather than out on Yas Island. The aquarium's own site counts more than 46,000 animals from over 300 species in ten themed zones, and lists its hours as 10 am to 10 pm every day, which makes it the rare Abu Dhabi attraction you can do after dinner. Three hours is ample; with small children it is two hours of tanks and one of the cafe.

What it feels like: dark, cool and slow. You move from zone to zone through low light with the tanks glowing on either side, and the pace is set by whichever child has stopped at the glass. The big tunnel and the largest tank are where families settle for a while; rays pass overhead and the reef fish do their endless circuit. Outside, Al Qana's waterfront has cafes and a walk along the canal, so the aquarium slots into an evening rather than eating a day.

Who this suits, and why: the family with toddlers and the school-holiday family with younger children, because it is indoor, pram-friendly and open late; active seniors and the multigenerational group, since it is level and there are benches; and couples looking for an easy evening in the city. Teenagers who have seen the Dubai Aquarium will find it familiar; Yas Island's SeaWorld is the bigger marine day for them.
