The story

Louvre Abu Dhabi stands in the Saadiyat Cultural District on Saadiyat Island, built on the idea, in Visit Abu Dhabi's words, that civilisations have always had more in common than in conflict. Its galleries, 9,200 square metres of them, set ancient objects beside modern works from different cultures and centuries, with loans from the Musée du Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Over it all is Jean Nouvel's silver dome, 180 metres across and 7,500 tonnes, pierced by 7,850 stars in eight layers so that sunlight falls through it in moving patterns, the effect known as the 'rain of light'. A Children's Museum is included with admission.

What it feels like: you walk out of the galleries and under the dome, and the light is the first thing you notice: small moving spots of sun on the ground around you, shifting as the hour changes. Inside, it is cool, and the galleries put objects from different cultures and centuries near each other, which is the museum's whole idea; it is easy to follow even if art is not your subject. Visit Abu Dhabi suggests allowing two to three hours; with children, the Children's Museum is where the day softens.

Who this suits: the multigenerational family and active seniors, since the museum has step-free access and lends wheelchairs free; the school-holiday family and teenagers, because Visit Abu Dhabi lists admission as free for under-18s; couples on an anniversary escape who like a slow afternoon; and anyone with an interest in art or photography. It is a day in Abu Dhabi, so pair it with the Grand Mosque or Qasr Al Watan and let your captain plan the timing.
