The story

iFLY Dubai is an indoor skydiving centre on level 1 of City Centre Mirdif, a shopping mall in Dubai. Instead of jumping from a plane, you fly in a vertical wind tunnel, where a strong column of air from below holds your body up. The operator sells iFLY's standard package: a training session for first-time flyers, with the pre-flight information and the body position you will need, and then two flights of one minute each. No experience is needed, and iFLY takes flyers from 3 years old, as long as they can wear one of its helmets comfortably.

What it feels like: the briefing is the nervous part, as you practise the flying position on the floor before your turn. Then the door opens, the roar of the air fills everything, and you lean forward into it. For the first few seconds your body does not know what to do; then the air takes your weight and you are floating, arms out, face in the wind. A minute sounds short, but in the tunnel it feels long, and the second flight often feels easier because you are no longer bracing against the air. You walk out grinning and a little windswept, already describing it to whoever waited outside.

Who this suits: the family with teenagers, and younger children too, since the minimum age is 3; friends groups and bachelor or bachelorette parties who want a shared thrill that is over in an afternoon; and adventure-minded couples or solo travellers who want a taste of skydiving without the aircraft. It is indoors, so it works in the summer months when outdoor adventures are hard going. It is not for anyone pregnant or with a history of shoulder dislocation.

What happens
