The story

House of Hype is an indoor attraction on Level 1 of The Dubai Mall, in the Fountain Views wing, directly above Social Distrikt. Inside, the venue counts more than 25 themed 'worlds' that you walk through at your own pace: a mirror room with a chandelier where the light pulses with the music (The Box), a laundromat whose washing machines hide a secret door (Satoshi's Laundromat), a glowing garden of light-up trees with performers (Electric Jungle), floor-to-ceiling projections of flowers (Pixel Garden), a 360-degree landscape seen from inside a giant bubble (Omnipop), a ball pit styled as an oversized bubble-tea cup (Kawaii Kave) and photo booths that turn your picture into something else (Starmakers). There is an arcade, Hypercade, with more than 50 game stations and prizes, and shops including a toy store. The operator sells the entry ticket on its own, or with a shared or private transfer from your hotel.

What it feels like: you step off a busy mall floor into near-darkness, music and coloured light, and the next hour or two is a string of small surprises, one room opening into the next. It is built for the camera: every room is set up for a photograph or a short video. Some rooms are loud, dim or flashing; others, like the flower projections and the light garden, are calmer. Younger children head for the ball pit and the arcade. Because the whole thing is indoors it is a sensible answer to a hot afternoon, and being in the Fountain Views wing of The Dubai Mall it fits into a Downtown day with the fountain in the evening.

Who this suits: the family with teenagers first, since it is the kind of place they will have seen on their phones already; the school-holiday family with children old enough to enjoy lights and games; friends groups, the ladies-only group and the bachelor or bachelorette trip, who come for the photographs. By the venue's rules, children up to 11 must be with an adult, and under-3s enter free. It is less suited to anyone who dislikes flashing lights, loud music or dark spaces, which the venue's Visit Dubai listing points out.
