The story

The Green Planet is a rainforest under one roof at City Walk in Al Wasl. The venue describes it as more than 3,000 plants and animals in a tropical biodome, in five zones: Creatures of the Night, the Flooded Rainforest, the Forest Floor, the Mid-story and the Canopy. Birds fly free over the paths, and the animals the venue names include a two-toed sloth, an anteater, lemurs, cotton-top tamarins, flying foxes, a blue and gold macaw, anacondas and a Burmese python. It is open every day from 10 am to 6 pm.

What it feels like: you walk in from the heat of the City Walk pavement into green shade, with birds crossing just above your head. The night zone is dim and quiet, and children go silent in it for a minute while their eyes adjust. Up among the trees, the moment worth the money is looking along a branch and finding the sloth there, asleep or moving so slowly that you only notice it has turned its head when you look again. Two hours is enough; you come out with a phone full of pictures of animals that did not pose, and the rest of the afternoon free.

Who this suits: the family with toddlers, because it is indoors, short and the venue lets children under two in free on its own ticket; the school-holiday family and the multigenerational group, since it is a calm morning that works for a grandparent and a five-year-old at once; and seniors with limited mobility, as the venue says it is wheelchair-friendly. The combo options add Ain Dubai, the observation wheel at Bluewaters, which the couple's escape and the friends group will want for the view from 250 metres up; the wheel takes about 38 minutes to go round.

What your ticket covers

Opening hours and entry times are confirmed for your date.

  1. Ticket-only guests make their own way to The Green Planet at City Walk, Al Wasl. On the transfer options a vehicle collects you from your Dubai hotel; the shared vehicle also collects other guests.

  2. The dim night zone and the flooded forest. Take them slowly with small children; the animals are easier to spot once your eyes adjust.

  3. The three rainforest layers, with birds flying overhead. Look along the branches for the sloth. Allow about two hours in all.

  4. On the combo options you also ride Ain Dubai at Bluewaters Island. The wheel is open 10 am to 9 pm with last admission at 8:15 pm; a turn takes about 38 minutes, and the venue asks you to allow 30 to 60 minutes before boarding. Your captain confirms with the operator whether the transfer covers the run between the two venues.

  5. On the transfer options the vehicle takes you back to your hotel.
