The story

In 1968 the count was down to 177. Gujarat's 2025 census counted 891, spread through Gir and a widening stretch of Saurashtra — the last wild population of Asiatic lions on the planet.

Two safaris, dawn and afternoon, in open gypsies with a forest guide who knows which prides are where. Crocodile-heavy Kamleshwar dam, leopard if you are lucky, and more birds than you will manage to name.

Long drive down through Saurashtra. Afternoon arrival, evening at the interpretation centre to learn what you are looking at.
Dawn gypsy safari into the core zone. Rest through the heat. Second safari in the late afternoon when the cats move.
