The story

Emirates Park Zoo is the family zoo on the Al Bahia side of Abu Dhabi, ten to fifteen minutes from Yas Island by the tourism board's page, which also puts its collection at over 1,500 animals from more than 200 species. It is a hands-on place rather than a grand one: giraffe feeding, camel rides, animal talks and a small rides-and-arcade area are the draws, and the walk round takes about three hours at a child's pace.

What it feels like: a morning of small hands and big animals. The giraffe feeding is the moment: a long grey tongue takes the leaf from a child's hand and the whole family laughs at once. The enclosures are close and the paths are flat and shaded in parts; it is warm in the middle of the day even in winter, so start early. There is a lot of animal noise, a lot of ice cream, and less walking than the Yas Island parks.

Who this suits, and why: the family with toddlers, above all, because the animals are close, the distances are short and a pram goes everywhere; the school-holiday family with children under about ten; and the multigenerational group, since grandparents can sit in the shade while the grandchildren feed the giraffes. Teenagers and couples will find a half-day enough and should be pointed at Yas Island or Saadiyat instead.
