The story

The Dubai Water Canal is a 3.2 km cut that Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority opened in November 2016, running from Business Bay past Safa Park and under Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Wasl Road and Jumeirah Road until it opens into the Arabian Gulf. With Dubai Creek and the Business Bay channel it closes a loop of water through the middle of the city. RTA built it with walkways along the banks, three pedestrian bridges of different designs and a waterfall worked into the Sheikh Zayed Road bridge. This option is one hour on a yacht on the canal, ticket only: you make your own way to the boarding point, which is printed on your voucher with the sailing time.

What it feels like: after a day of malls and taxis, an hour on the water slows the city down. The traffic is up on the bridges rather than beside you, the towers of Business Bay line the water, and people walk and cycle along the promenades on the banks. If your sailing is in the evening the bridges and walkways are lit, and there is usually more air moving on deck than on the pavement. It is not an adventure; it is a calm hour and a different angle on Dubai, and that is the point of it.

Who this suits: the couple on an anniversary escape or honeymoon who want a quiet hour between two busy days; active seniors and the multigenerational family, because once aboard there is little walking; and the school-holiday family whose children have had enough of queues. The operator does not name the yacht or the operator, so your captain confirms the boarding point, the sailing time and what is served on board before you pay.

What happens on board

Boarding time and point are confirmed for your date.

  1. Make your own way to the boarding point named on your voucher; this option includes no hotel transfer. Your captain tells you how early to arrive when the booking is confirmed.

  2. The yacht sails the canal for about an hour. The exact route, and whether it reaches the Gulf end or turns back sooner, is set by the operator; your captain confirms it from the operator's voucher.

  3. You step off where you boarded and carry on with your evening on your own.
