The story

Xclusive Yachts runs shared yacht cruises from its own berth, Xclusive Marina, behind Al Majara Towers in Dubai Marina. You buy a seat, not the boat: the yacht is shared with other guests, and by the operator's page it is usually a 65-foot catamaran or an 86-foot yacht, with an upper deck and a lower deck you can move between. The route leaves the Marina and runs along the coast; the operator names Ain Dubai, JBR and Atlantis, and Visit Dubai's listings of Xclusive's tours add Bluewaters Island and the Burj Al Arab. Depending on the departure, breakfast or a barbecue is served on board: the operator describes the barbecue as meat, chicken and vegetarian options with side salads and bread. The operator sells nine departures, from the Early Riser (the sheet names no meal on it) and the Late Riser with breakfast to the Midday, Afternoon, Sunset, Extended Sunset, Twilight and Moonlight sailings with a barbecue.

What it feels like: you slip your shoes off at the gangway, find a seat on the top deck, and within minutes the Marina towers are rising on both sides of the channel. Out on the open water the breeze picks up, the beach at JBR opens out, and the great wheel of Ain Dubai stands over the water. Then comes the food, eaten with the skyline sliding past. On the Sunset sailing the towers turn gold and then light up; on the Twilight and Moonlight sailings you get the city already lit, and cooler air. The morning sailings are the bright daytime version, and fit around a young child's nap and an afternoon at the hotel.

Who this suits: couples on an anniversary or honeymoon who want an evening on a yacht without paying for the whole boat; friends groups and ladies-only groups, who can each pay one fare; and the school-holiday family, because the operator takes infants and fits life jackets on young children. For a vegetarian Gujarati family the barbecue has vegetarian options by the operator's own page; Jain food is not mentioned, so ask your captain before you book.

What happens on board

Boarding time and point are confirmed for your date.

  1. Make your own way to Xclusive Marina, behind Al Majara Towers on Al Hubob Street in Dubai Marina; the operator suggests DMCC metro station, a taxi, or parking at Marina Mall. Arrive 20 to 30 minutes early, as the operator asks. There is no transfer on these options.

  2. Shoes come off at boarding. Children under 9 wear life jackets for the whole cruise; infants under 2 stay in the saloon or cabin with an adult.

  3. Out of the Marina and along the coast past JBR and Ain Dubai, towards Atlantis and the Burj Al Arab, as the operator's page and Visit Dubai's listings describe the route; your captain confirms the route of your sailing. Breakfast or the barbecue is served on board, by the departure you choose.

  4. The yacht returns to Xclusive Marina. The operator gives 2 hours for the Early Riser and no length for the others; Visit Dubai's listings of Xclusive's tours give 2 hours for most departures and 3 hours for the Afternoon and Extended Sunset sailings.
