The story

Dreams Boats runs what it calls a floating cafe: a short private cruise on a small boat that carries no more than six guests, adults or children, with Arabic hospitality served on board. The company sails from two places in Dubai, Al Jaddaf Waterfront and Business Bay, every day from 4 pm to midnight. The trip lasts 45 minutes, and on board you are served gahwa, the Arabic coffee poured as a welcome, with tea, dates, nuts and chips, and a choice of soft drinks or fresh juice. The operator sells one option: the boat for a party of one to six, without a transfer, so you make your own way to the waterfront. Which of the two departure points your booking uses is on the operator's voucher.

What it feels like: this is the quiet end of Dubai's boat trips. There is no crowd, no DJ and no buffet queue; it is your own party on a small boat, the coffee pot going round and a plate of dates on the table while the waterfront and the towers slide past. In the late afternoon the light goes gold; after dark the city comes on in lights along the water.
