The story

Dinner in the Sky is a dining table on a platform that a crane lifts into the air, with the guests belted into their seats around it and the crew working in the middle. In Dubai it runs from Al Sufouh, at Skydive Dubai next to Dubai Marina. By the operator's own pages, the table seats up to 22 guests a session, rises to a maximum of 45 to 50 metres depending on the wind, and stays up for about an hour, with about 15 minutes to belt everyone in before and 15 to unbelt after. The menu is three courses, a starter, a main and a dessert, each with a choice of two, and vegetarian dishes are marked on it. The operator sells the dinner sitting, meeting at the venue, with no transfer.

What it feels like: you arrive at a tent on the ground, register and hear the safety briefing, and then you take your seat at the long table and the belt clicks shut. Then the crane lifts the table. At the top the noise of the road falls away and the lit towers of the Marina stand around you. The table is open on every side, the breeze moves the napkins, and the food arrives from the middle of the table as if this were a normal restaurant. After a few minutes, it almost is.

Who this suits: honeymooners and couples marking an anniversary or a proposal, for whom it is the one dinner of the trip they will talk about; the luxury traveller; friends groups and bachelor parties who can fill a table; and families with older children, since the operator seats children from 110 cm tall with an adult. It is not for anyone afraid of heights, and grandparents who need the washroom often should think twice: once the table is up, a trip to the washroom means lowering it for everyone.

What happens

The plan as the operator runs it. Start times and pickup are confirmed for your date.

  1. Make your own way to the Dinner in the Sky site at Skydive Dubai, Al Sufouh, next to Dubai Marina. No transfer is included.

  2. Register at the lounge tent at least 30 minutes before your session, by the operator's FAQ. A safety supervisor briefs everyone before the flight.

  3. You take your seat at the table and the crew fasten your seat belt.

  4. The crane lifts the table up to 45 to 50 metres, wind permitting, and three courses are served from the middle of the table.

  5. The table is lowered and the crew unbelt everyone.
