The story

The Dubai Fountain plays on Burj Lake, the 23.81-acre lake between the Dubai Mall, Souk Al Bahar and the Burj Khalifa. Anyone can watch it free from the promenade; these two tickets put you on the lake instead. The boardwalk is a platform out on the water that Emaar's own fountain page places within 9 metres of the show. The lake ride is a traditional wooden abra that takes you across the lake for 20 to 30 minutes, past Souk Al Bahar and the Palace Downtown hotel with the tower above you. Shows run every 30 minutes from 6 pm to 11 pm every evening, with two afternoon shows as well.

What it feels like: you queue at the counter on the lower ground floor of the Dubai Mall with the crowd heading for the promenade, then walk out on to the water while they stay behind the rail. When the music starts the jets go up close enough that you feel the thump of each burst, and with the wind behind them the spray reaches you. From the abra it is quieter: the boat slides out, the tower is lit above you, and the show is something you watch from inside rather than across. Either way it is a short, easy half hour, and dinner is a few steps away in the mall.

Who this suits: the school-holiday family and the multigenerational group, since the boardwalk is flat and short and the mall's restaurants are a minute away; honeymooners and the couple on an anniversary escape, for the abra ride at show time. Grandparents who find crowds tiring see the show from the water rather than over the heads of the promenade crowd.

What happens at the show

Show times and doors open are confirmed for your date.

  1. Ticket-only guests make their own way to the Dubai Mall; on the private options a vehicle collects you from your Dubai hotel. The boardwalk entry is through the main At The Top counter on the Lower Ground level of the Dubai Mall; be there 30 minutes before your booked time.

  2. Boardwalk: walk out on to the platform and watch the show from within a few metres of the jets. Lake ride: board the abra at Burj Lake for a 20 to 30 minute ride across the water.

  3. Walk back into the mall for dinner or along the promenade; on the private options the vehicle takes you back to your hotel.
