The story
The mistake is doing all of Bali from one hotel. Ubud and the coast are ninety minutes and two entirely different holidays apart.
Ubud first — jungle, temples, a villa with a pool over the valley. Then down to the coast for the last two nights, when you have stopped wanting to see things and just want the sea.
Your journey outline
Each stage can cover one or more days. Tell us what you would change; your final itinerary is agreed before booking.
-
Land at Denpasar and drive up to Ubud, about ninety minutes inland and several degrees cooler. The villa has its own pool and looks into the valley, which is dense green and loud with insects after dark. Dinner nearby, and the first proper sleep after a long flight.
-
Tegallalang at first light, because the rice terraces are on every tour bus route by nine and almost empty at seven. Tirta Empul afterwards, a water temple where Balinese families queue to bathe under the spouts; you may join if you follow the etiquette. The Campuhan ridge walk at dusk to finish.
-
A waterfall morning: Tegenungan, which is wide and swimmable, and Tukad Cepung, which falls into a cave where the light comes through a gap in the roof at mid-morning and is the photograph everybody wants. The afternoon is free, and a Balinese massage at the end of it.
-
South to the coast, stopping at Uluwatu: a temple on a cliff 70 metres above the sea, with monkeys who steal glasses and a kecak dance at sunset performed by a chorus of men rather than instruments. On to Nusa Dua afterwards, which is calm, flat and made for doing nothing.
-
Nothing is scheduled. The beach, the pool, a book, and a dinner set up on the sand in the evening. This day is doing structural work in the trip: it is the one you will describe when someone asks what the honeymoon was like.
-
A slow last morning and the transfer to Denpasar. Five nights, three of them in the valley and two on the sea, which is the right way round because the hills are the interesting half and the coast is the recovery.
