The story

Aquaventure is the water park attached to the Atlantis hotel at the top of the Palm, and it is the one Ahmedabad families ask about by name. The park is built around its slide towers, Trident and Neptune among them, a river with rapids, a stretch of private beach on the Gulf, and Dolphin Bay, which is a separate booking. You arrive at ten when it opens, claim sunbeds near a children's zone if you have small ones, and the day runs itself: the towers for the teenagers, the river for everyone, the beach for the last hour.

What it feels like: loud, wet and hot in the good way. Some of the big rides carry a height rule of 1.2 metres, so children below that stay with the four Splashers zones, which are shallow water, gentle slides and climbing frames built for first-timers, and are honestly where most under-eights spend the day anyway. The rapids river is the moment worth the money for a mixed family: everyone in one ring, grandparents included, bumping through the waves. Sunscreen, a hat and water matter here more than anywhere else in Dubai; it is a day outdoors.

The Super Pass adds the Lost World Aquarium inside Atlantis, home to some 65,000 marine animals; it is indoors, so keep it for the middle of the afternoon when the sun is worst. Who it suits: families with children of about six and over, friends groups, and couples who want a beach day with rides. Seniors who do not want the slides still get the beach and the river, but it is a long day in the sun. The Palm sits beside the Marina, so a dhow or yacht cruise the same evening is a natural pairing.
