The story
Radhanagar was named the best beach in Asia by Time magazine back in 2004 — a long curve of white sand backed by rainforest, with almost nothing built on it.
Havelock for the reefs and the sunsets, Neil for the quiet. The ferry between them takes an hour and is the only commute you will have all week.
Your journey outline
Each stage can cover one or more days. Tell us what you would change; your final itinerary is agreed before booking.
-
Fly into Port Blair. The Cellular Jail is the reason to spend the evening here rather than pushing straight on: a colonial prison built to isolate political prisoners, with the light-and-sound show after dark telling that history from inside the courtyard. Sobering, and the right way to arrive.
-
The ferry to Havelock takes ninety minutes to two hours depending on the boat, and should be booked ahead because it sells out. Settle in, then Radhanagar for sunset — Time magazine named it the best beach in Asia back in 2004, and the evening light makes the case again.
-
Elephant Beach by boat, which is the easier approach than the jungle walk. The reef starts in waist-deep water, so this is a good place for a first snorkel, and the coral and fish are close enough that no one needs to swim far. The afternoon is free and best spent horizontal.
-
The ferry to Neil Island, now Shaheed Dweep, which is smaller, flatter and slower than Havelock. Bharatpur for the shallow water, the natural rock bridge at low tide, which needs the tide table rather than luck, and Laxmanpur for sunset.
-
The ferry back to Port Blair and the flight out. Four nights, two islands, and a set of beaches that are still, for now, nothing like as crowded as the ones people fly much further to reach.
