The story
Al Shindagha Museum is Dubai Culture's heritage museum on the Creek, in the historic district where the city began. It is the side of Dubai many first-time visitors miss: restored heritage houses by the water instead of towers. The museum's own site describes two houses on its standard ticket. Dubai Creek: Birth of a City tells how trade with the outside world started on the Creek, and walks you through the firsts that followed, the first bank, the first police house and the first produce market, ending in a multimedia room and a film built from the stories of merchants, seafarers and boat builders. The Perfume House shows how scented oils and perfumes were made by hand, and the part scent plays in Emirati religious and everyday life.
What it feels like: after a few days of malls and glass, this is quiet. You walk in from the metro opposite to quiet rooms of artefacts and archival photographs of the Creek, and the film puts faces and voices to them. The Perfume House is the one to linger in, where you meet the unusual ingredients behind Emirati scents and the old way of turning them into oils. You come out onto the Creek front with a sense of how the town grew from this water, which makes the skyline you drove past that morning make more sense.
Who this suits: active seniors and the multigenerational group, because it is calm, short and mostly indoors, with the metro opposite the door; the school-holiday family with children old enough for a film and a museum; and the couple's escape or the solo traveller who wants one afternoon of history on a trip that is otherwise shopping and theme parks. It is too quiet for the friends group chasing thrills.
