The story

Ten minutes from the towers, Abu Dhabi has a forest that grows in the sea. The Mangrove National Park is the protected belt of grey mangroves along the eastern side of the city, listed by the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi, and the way to see it is from the water. The operator's tour puts you in a kayak with a guide for about two hours of paddling through the tidal channels, with the city skyline appearing and disappearing behind the trees.

What it feels like: quiet, green and close. The channels narrow until the roots are an arm's length on either side, the water is clear enough to see crabs on the mud, and herons and the odd flamingo stand about ignoring you. The guide keeps the group together and does the talking; you do the paddling, which is gentle in the channels and a little harder if the wind is up on the open stretches.
