The story
The whole of Abu Dhabi in one day, done in the order that makes sense: the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque while you are fresh, a long drive through the landmark districts, and the Heritage Village on the breakwater with the skyline across the water. Lunch is at your own cost; your captain tells you whether the day's route has a stop for it.
The mosque is the morning's weight: white marble courtyard, columns inlaid with coloured stone flowers, 82 domes and the 5,400 square metre hand-knotted carpet in the main hall, by the mosque centre's own figures, and a hush that settles on everyone who walks in. The Heritage Village is the opposite kind of place. It sits near Marina Mall on the Corniche breakwater and recreates an old souk, a small mosque and a desert camp modelled on life in the UAE before oil; artisans work at pottery, glass-blowing and weaving on looms, and there is a sea breeze off the water with the glass towers lined up on the far shore. It is where the children stop asking how long and start asking what things are.
Who this suits, and why: multigenerational groups who want Abu Dhabi ticked off in one organised day with most of it seated in a vehicle; the school-holiday family, because the Heritage Village crafts and animals hold a child's attention after a formal morning; and first-time couples or friends groups staying in Abu Dhabi who would rather have a driver than a plan. Active seniors manage it well, but it is a long day in the heat, so choose the cooler months or take the half-day version if stamina is a question.
